MBA vs PGDM: Know the Difference Between

While aiming for a career in management, many students often come across the two most prevalent courses: MBA (Master of Business Administration) and PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management). Both courses train students with some excellent business and leadership skills; however, they are not the same. The difference mainly comes from the type of affiliation that each course embodies, the structure it offers to its curriculum and the kind of recognition it provides. Though universities provide a general MBA degree, which is more theoretical, PGDM courses generally offer more skills required by the industry and practical learning from autonomous institutions. Understand this contrast for yourself and then make your decision based on the aspirations of your career.

MBA vs PGDM: Full Forms

  • MBA:

MBA stands for Master of Business Administration. This course comes from universities or colleges that are under recognized institutions or government establishments. The purpose of MBAs is to equip students with a broad and profound understanding in terms of business administration principles and management strategies.

  • PGDM:

On the other hand, PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management. It is a postgraduate diploma course that is provided by autonomous institutes approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Such institutes, being autonomous and not affiliated to any university, provide a diploma instead of a degree. PGDM programs focus more on the practical and industry-relevant aspects of management.

MBA vs PGDM: Duration

  • MBA:

On the whole, the duration of an MBA program is about 2 years. However, there are very few schools that offer a part-time or an executive MBA with durations that are a little different; otherwise, it is about 2 years.

  • PGDM:

Just like the MBA, the PGDM is generally a 2-year program. However, there are also 1-year executive PGDMs available for professionals with significant work experience.

MBA vs PGDM: Eligibility Criteria

  • MBA:

A bachelor’s degree in any domain from any recognized university with a minimum aggregate of 50% is must for pursuing an MBA. The admission procedure in the top MBA programs is usually through entrance exam scores like CAT, GMAT, XAT etc., followed by group discussions and personal interview(s).

  • PGDM:

Eligibility for the PGDM is at par with an MBA wherein one requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum percentage requirement. Most institutions ask for entrance exam scores such as CAT, XAT, MAT, or GMAT for the PGDM. In a few cases, more emphasis is provided on professional work experience, especially for an executive PGDM.

MBA/PGDM Admission

MBA vs PGDM: Specializations

  • MBA:

MBA programs have been designed such that there could be a large number of specializations that may include finance, marketing, human resources, operations, and entrepreneurship, among others. Normally, the specializations are undertaken during the second year of studying the course.

  • PGDM:

PGDM programs were also designed with diversified specializations but with more focused and contemporary approaches. Some of the niche specializations in digital marketing, supply chain management, international business, and business analytics may be included in some PGDM programs. These courses are meant to cater to the specific needs of industries.

MBA vs PGDM: Curriculum and Course Structure

  • MBA:

The curriculum of an MBA is more theoretical and academic. There is little flexibility in updating the syllabus and universities strictly stick to building a strong foundation with business and management theories. In most MBA programs, research, academic learning, and getting students ready for managerial roles in the corporate world are focused on.

  • PGDM:

The PGDM curriculum is relatively more oriented towards the industry and practical. Autonomous institutes offering PGDM can opt for a syllabus that suits the changing trends of industry and markets. PGDM programs focus more on the practical application of management concepts; thus, they represent a more dynamic form of business school instruction.

MBA vs PGDM: Degree vs. Diploma

  • MBA:

An MBA is a graduate or postgraduate degree offered by the universities or institutions affiliated to a recognized university. It is an international, globally recognized postgraduate academic degree in business management.

  • PGDM:

PGDM: It is actually a post graduate diploma in management. It is a diploma course offered by autonomous institutes that are approved by bodies such as AICTE, All India Council for Technical Education in India. Since the institutes offering PGDM are not a part of any university, they cannot give degrees but only a diploma.

Conclusion

Whether you choose an MBA or PGDM both would lead to excellent career opportunities, and which one you might have will really depend on your career aspirations, budget, and the learning experience you crave. If you’re looking for a theoretically rich program with global recognition and prefer a more traditional academic setting, then an MBA from a reputed university might be the best fit. If one needs a course that is flexible and more focused on the industry and also more similar to the practical aspects of business and thus has more adaptability with the market trends, then, PGDM from any top autonomous institute would be in the correct direction.
