The institute was established in April 2003 by the Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust, which was established in 1984, and later merged with Bharath University and Research Institute in 2004, with a commitment to the betterment of medical education. Initially accepting 100 MBBS students per year, the institute later expanded to offer various undergraduate programs during 2009-2010, currently accepting 250 undergraduate students per year and offering 163 seats in postgraduate and specialist courses. The institute also has a large hospital with 1,170 beds.
