About National Testing Agency (NTA)

Since 2019, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been responsible for conducting the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for admissions into undergraduate medical programs. This has been carried out with the approval of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (as per O.M. no. V.11025/14/216-MEP dated December 6, 2017) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) (as per Order No. 35-5/2017-TS.I dated September 24, 2018).

The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI), has established the National Testing Agency (NTA) as an independent and autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act (1860). Designed to be self-sustaining, NTA conducts efficient, transparent, and internationally standardized examinations to evaluate candidates’ competency for admission into top higher education institutions. Its mission is to enhance equity and quality in education by developing and administering research-driven assessments that are valid, reliable, efficient, transparent, fair, and aligned with global standards. NTA upholds a strong commitment to the quality, effectiveness, equity, security, and efficiency of its evaluations.

The Objectives of NTA

  • To administer efficient, transparent, and internationally standardized assessments to evaluate candidates’ competencies for admission.
  • To conduct research on educational, professional, and testing frameworks to identify knowledge gaps and implement measures to bridge them.
  • To generate and distribute information and research on education and professional development standards.

About NEET (UG)

  • Since 2019, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been conducting the NEET (UG) exam with approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development). This follows the directive of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, as stated in its judgment dated November 22, 2018, in C.A. No. 11230 of 2018, concerning the case of CBSE vs. T.K. Rangarajan & Others (Para 22).
  • According to Section 14 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, NEET (UG) must be conducted as a standardized and uniform National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to undergraduate medical programs across all medical institutions. Likewise, under Section 14 of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act, 2020, NEET (UG) serves as the common entrance test for undergraduate admissions in disciplines such as BAMS, BUMS, and BSMS within institutions governed by this Act. Additionally, NEET (UG) is applicable for admission to the BHMS course under the National Commission for Homeopathy. Similar provisions for BDS course admissions are outlined in the Dentists Act, 1948, and its associated regulations.
  • The Hon’ble Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of this Act in its judgment dated April 29, 2020, in the case of Christian Medical College Vellore Association vs. UOI & Others, while resolving Transferred Case (Civil) No. 98 of 2021 along with related transferred cases, writ petitions, and special leave petitions (SLPs).
  • Since 2020, NEET (UG) has served as the qualifying entrance examination for admission to MBBS and BDS courses at AIIMS and JIPMER, even though these medical institutions operate under separate statutes. This is in accordance with the provisions of Section 14(1) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019.
  • The norms/procedure/timelines followed in conducting NEET (UG) are as provided under Section 10 D of the Indian Medical Council Act and the relevant Regulations on Graduate Medical Education as notified under Section 33 of the said Act from time to time and as per Section 14 of the NMC Act (2019) since 2020.

NEET (UG) – 2025 and Role of NTA

  • NEET (UG)2025 will be conducted by NTA as per the schedule provided in the “Information at a Glance” for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, and BHMS courses. This will be in accordance with the applicable norms, guidelines, and regulations issued by the respective regulatory bodies overseeing the Indian System of Medicine in all medical institutions governed under this Act.
  • The official NTA website for NEET (UG)2025 is https://neet.nta.nic.in/. All test-related updates, including any amendments, will be available exclusively on this website. Candidates are advised to visit it regularly for the latest information.
