The university was set up on 25 June 1959 (or 11 Ashar 2016 BS), Tribhuvan University is the most established and biggest college in Nepal. The college was named after the late King Tribhuvan. In its initial years, all the postgraduate classes were held at Tripureshwor Campus. The authoritative office was likewise situated in Tripureshwor. It was uniquely in 1967, that the college was migrated to its primary grounds in Kirtipur – an antiquated town around 5 km south-west of the city of Kathmandu.
