NMC Announces Updated MBBS Seat Matrix for 2025–26: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released an updated MBBS Seat Matrix for the academic year 2025–26, highlighting major expansions in undergraduate medical education across India.
This update includes approvals for new medical colleges, increased seat capacities in several existing institutions, and a few seat reductions based on infrastructure or compliance reviews.
According to NMC’s official notice, the total number of MBBS seats in India has now risen from 1,17,750 in 2024–25 to 1,28,875 in 2025–26, marking a net increase of 11,350 seats (excluding AIIMS and JIPMER institutions).

Key Highlights of the Update
New Medical Colleges Approved:
Over 35 new medical colleges have received approval for establishment across states such as Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Seat Increases in Existing Colleges:
Institutions like Naraina Medical College (UP), Parul Institute of Medical Sciences (Gujarat), and Geetanjali Medical College (Rajasthan) have seen significant increases in their seat intake.
Introduction of ESIC Medical Colleges:
New ESIC Medical Colleges in Delhi, Noida, and Maharashtra have been approved, further expanding government medical education opportunities.
State-wise Expansion:
- Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra saw the largest seat additions, with several private and trust-based colleges expanding capacity.
- Madhya Pradesh and Bihar also added new government colleges in Singrauli, Sheopur, and Madhubani, among others.
